Game 22 Preview: Chatham vs. Harwich
Chatham is officially one game past the halfway point of the 2024 CCBL regular season. The Anglers took on Yarmouth-Dennis in their 21st contest of the summer, which they dropped 4-2. The A’s left 14 runners on base and batted 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position, leading to the loss despite the Red Sox committing five errors.

Harwich travels to Veterans Field Thursday as Chatham’s next opponent. Just five days ago, the Anglers beat the Mariners 13-12 in a heart-pounding walk-off finish after coming back from a seven-run deficit. The two teams are 1-1 against each other this summer, and both currently hold East Division playoff spots.

Here’s what to know ahead of Chatham’s (10-11, East) third matchup of the season versus Harwich (9-12, East):

Probable Starters

Tyler Kozera (UCF) will make his second start of the summer for the Anglers. His first start was back on July 5, where Kozera wasn’t informed he’d take the mound until the morning of Chatham’s home contest against Cotuit. Regardless, he shined. Kozera tossed 4.1 innings of one-run baseball, struck out four batters and walked one. With more time to prepare this time around, the rising sophomore at Central Florida shows great promise in this starting spot.

After originally being penciled in to start against Chatham in the two teams’ last meeting, before Olin Johnson started instead, Chance Mako is set to take the mound for Harwich. It will be Mako’s first start of the summer. The NC State product has made four appearances this summer, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 1-0 record. Mako has twice the amount of walks (eight) as strikeouts (four).

Chatham Players To Watch

Titan Hayes (Austin Peay) grew into Chatham’s mainstay closer, though he’s left the team to prepare for the MLB Draft. Right-hander Hayden Murphy (Auburn) stands out as a potential option to become the Anglers’ new late-relief staple. Murphy’s had a pair of tough outings this summer but clearly has the tools to shine in an elevated role. He’s made five appearances, 11.2 innings, and tallied a 4.63 ERA, yet his 16 strikeouts rank second on the team.

While he’s still with the team for a few more days, Austin Overn (USC) is set to leave for the MLB Draft soon as well. Overn’s been Chatham’s top hitter all summer long. He’s batting .342, slugging .579 and possesses a 1.004 OPS — which is the highest total in the CCBL. Overn also provides major power despite being a sure-gloved, speedy center fielder, totaling a tied-for team-high three home runs.

Harwich Players To Watch

Utah Valley infielding product Daniel Dickinson destroyed Chatham last time out. He exploded for three RBIs, which tied a team-best, as well as two hits. All three of his RBIs came on a bases-loaded triple in the third inning to give the Mariners an 8-2 lead. This summer, Dickinson is batting .200 with six RBIs in 10 games played.

Harwich Shortstop Ryan Weingartner poses a threat, too. He was issued three bases on balls last time the A’s played the Mariners as Chatham’s pitching staff located outside of the zone all night long against him. Weingartner is one of Harwich’s best hitters, totaling a .260 batting average along with a .929 OPS and three home runs.

Number To Know: 8

In their aforementioned come-from-behind victory over Harwich, the Anglers unleashed eight runs from the eighth through the 10th inning. It allowed them to completely flip the game on its head. The A’s trailed 11-5 heading into the seventh and wound up with a 13-12 win.

Chatham plated four eight-inning runs in a messy way. A bases loaded walk, two wild pitches and a Jett Johnston (Auburn) groundout into a double play that scored one run was all of the Anglers’ production that inning. A John Bay (Austin Peay) two-run double made it 11-11 in the ninth before scoring a pair in the 10th to win it.

Last Time They Played

Chatham shocked Harwich 13-12 in 10 innings on July 7 at Veterans Field. The Anglers were down by as much as seven runs but stormed back with six runs across the eighth and ninth frames to tie the game and send it into an extra inning.

Campbell Smithwick (Ole Miss) delivered a walk-off RBI sacrifice fly to cap off Chatham’s extraordinary comeback. One of the key cogs for the Anglers’ victory was right-handed reliever Chance Cox (Austin Peay), who tossed three scoreless innings to keep the Mariners at bay while the A’s retaliated.
