Game 23 Preview: Chatham at Brewster
Chatham avoided its second three-game losing streak of the summer by defeating Harwich 7-6 Thursday. The Anglers win over the Mariners was their second in five days. The first came in stunning comeback fashion but this time, the roles were nearly reversed.
The A’s scored seven unanswered runs and led 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. But Harwich’s lineup started to flash its power, blasting three home runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut Chatham’s lead to one. Hayden Murphy (Auburn) shut the door on any potential comeback with a four-out save.
Next, Chatham faces another east division foe in Brewster. The Anglers have split their first two meetings with the Whitecaps, who are winless in their last two games.

Chatham will send Liam Paddack (Gonzaga) to the mound for his fourth start of the summer. In his last appearance on July 6 against Falmouth, Paddack was lights out. The lefty dominated the Commodores lineup, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings. Paddack struck out a season-high eight batters and allowed just four hits.
Paddack has been a consistent figure in Chatham’s starting rotation. Paddack’s 18 strikeouts across 11 innings are the most of any A’s pitcher. He’s accumulated a 3.27 ERA and allowed a .154 batting average to opposing hitters as well.
Brewster’s Levi Huesman is set to get his first start of the season. The lefty from Vanderbilt has been a crucial piece in the Whitecaps’ bullpen, pitching 11.2 innings across four appearances while leading Brewster in wins with two. Though his ERA stands at 5.40, Huesman has only allowed 12 hits and struck out 15 batters.
Jayden Davis (Vanderbilt) registered his first three-hit game for Chatham against Harwich. Davis has struggled to consistently string together strong at-bats with the Anglers, batting just .205, but Thursday could be a turning point. The second baseman entered this summer coming off a strong season with Vanderbilt, batting .315 with a .439 slugging percentage while driving in 36 runs.
Along with Davis, Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh) provided the Anglers with a boost in its latest win. Following Davis’ double in the fifth, Cantwell drove him in the ensuing at-bat to put Chatham up 7-1. Cantwell leads the Anglers in on-base percentage (.444) and walks (17) while his eight RBIs rank third.
Daniel Cuvet was one of the best freshmen in the country this spring and will be a top draft prospect in a couple years. Cuvet briefly left the Cape to play with USA Baseball but has been on a tear since returning a week ago. The third baseman leads Brewster in batting average (.320), slugging percentage (.540) and OPS (.957). Cuvet has blasted three home runs and recorded 13 RBIs in 50 at-bats.
Ryder Helfrick is another strong power hitter for Brewstwer. Helfrick is second in the Cape League in home runs (six) and RBIs (21) while batting .270. The catcher has established himself as one of the best hitters on the Cape despite having a quiet freshman season with Arkansas. Helfrick had a .179 batting average across 31 games this spring.
Brewster’s lineup is one of the most dangerous in the Cape League, but its pitching staff has been inconsistent. The Whitecaps 5.38 ERA is the worst in the CCBL. They’ve also allowed at least 10 runs four different times this season. Though, Brewster’s pitching staff has been better as of late. In its previous four games, Brewster has allowed more than three runs just once.
