Game 28 Preview: Chatham at Hyannis
For the third time this season, the Anglers are due for a battle against Hyannis after splitting the two teams’ first two meetings. Chatham stays out West for the second game in a row, as its last outcome came Thursday in a 8-5 loss to Cotuit.

Chayton Krauss (Dallas Baptist) crushed a pair of two-run homers in just his second game in an A’s uniform to help Chatham out to a 5-3 lead halfway through. But the Ketteleers roared back after plating five unanswered runs to end the contest. The game was called in the eighth inning due to a lack of light at Lowell Park, rewarding Cotuit with the win.

The Harbor Hawks present another away challenge for the Anglers. They’re the No. 3 seed in the West Division through 27 games, though they’re fresh off a 4-3 defeat to Orleans.

Here’s what to know before Chatham (15-12, East) takes on Hyannis (15-11-1, West) at McKeon Park Friday:

Probable Starters

Right-handed pitcher Quinn Holt (Austin Peay) will start for Chatham. He’ll be making his debut for the Anglers after being activated to the roster Wednesday. The incoming Austin Peay transfer spent the spring at Keystone College, where the 6-foot-6 hurler started four games, posted a 2.87 ERA and struck out 23 batters.

He will match up against Hyannis starter Aaron Savary, who’s statistically its best pitcher. The right-hander from Iowa is the Harbor Hawks’ ERA leader, posting a 2.20 mark across 16.1 innings. He’s started just two games but made five appearances. In those outings, Savary has struck out 22 batters and holds opponents to a .151 batting average — both team-bests.

Chatham Players To Watch

One of Chatham’s newest-rostered players is infielder/outfielder Will Bermudez (UC Irvine). He joined the team Wednesday and made his debut Thursday at Cotuit, going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double and flashing a reliable glove in left field. At UC Irvine this past spring, Bermudez earned All Big-West Second-Team honors. He had 62 hits for a .301 clip at the plate, while blasting four homers and tacking on 48 RBIs.

Gabe Van Emon (UConn) is relatively new as well, making just three appearances. But they’ve been loud ones. He’s allowed two earned runs in 9.1 innings, recording a 1-0 record while striking out a whopping 12 batters. Van Emon has also held opposing teams to a measly .133 batting average, boasts a 0.64 WHIP and has only issued two walks this summer. He should be a weapon out of the bullpen who Chatham will look to deploy Friday.

Hyannis Players To Watch

Kane Kepley is an explosive player in center field for the Harbor Hawks. His 15 steals rank second in the CCBL. The Liberty product receives plentiful opportunities to swipe bags, too, as he’s walked a CCBL-best 30 times — nine more than the next-closest player in the league. Kepley’s also accumulated a .819 OPS and a team-best .448 OBP, which ranks sixth in the CCBL as well.

Meanwhile, Michael Detallo has been Hyannis’ RBI-machine, driving in a team-best 17 runs this summer. Detallo, a first baseman out of Dallas Baptist, has totaled an OPS of .757, is batting .292 and has hit seven doubles, which is the most on the Harbor Hawks. He provides more efficiency than power at the plate, hitting just one homer in 24 appearances.

Number To Know: .017

Chatham and Hyannis have a knack for getting on base. In fact, both squads possess the two highest OBP totals for each respective division. The Anglers rank third overall and first in the East with a .356 on-base rate, while the Harbor Hawks lead the CCBL at a .373 mark — just a .017 difference between the two totals.

Patient and calculated at-bats are a main talking point for the A’s under first-year manager Jeremy “Sheets” Sheetinger, and it’s been working. Though, Chatham meets its maker in the on-base department on the road in Hyannis, in what could be a high-scoring affair.

Last Time They Played

The Anglers won 5-2 over the Harbor Hawks at Veterans Field on June 26 in a game that was called a full contest in five innings due to fog. The premature ending clinched a victory for Chatham that broke a two-game losing streak.

Aiva Arquette essentially closed Hyannis out with one swing of the bat, belting a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Former A’s pitchers Griffin Herring (New York Yankees) and Brian Zeldin (Georgia) held strong on the mound, and the Harbor Hawks didn’t have time for any sort of comeback.
