Game 29 Preview: Chatham vs. Cotuit

Two days ago, Chatham held the longest active winning streak in the CCBL — with five straight victories. Though heading into Saturday’s matchup with Cotuit, the Anglers are one of two teams with two straight defeats.
Chatham’s unbeaten run came to an end Thursday with a loss to Cotuit before getting shut out by Hyannis 6-0 Friday. The A’s failed to produce multiple hits in a single inning, finishing with just three overall. Hyannis starter Aaron Savary dominated Chatham’s lineup, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing a single base knock.
Next up for the A’s is a matchup versus Cotuit for the second time in three days. The Kettleers are on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Wareham 6-1 Friday.
Here’s everything to know ahead of Chatham’s (15-13, East) meeting with Cotuit (18-9, West) Saturday at Veterans Field:
Probable Starters
Ryan Jenkins (St. Mary’s) will get his second start of the summer for the Anglers. Jenkins made his debut on July 14 against Orleans. He tossed four innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits in a 4-3 Chatham win. Jenkins is coming off a season with Riverside Community College at the Junior College level. In 61 innings, Jenkins recorded a 2.95 ERA and struck out 51 batters.
Cotuit sends Joey Volchko to the mound Saturday for his third of the season. Volchko has accumulated a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings with the Kettleers. The righty’s 15 strikeouts are the third most on Cotuit. Volchko spent the spring with Stanford, where he was primarily used out of the bullpen, making six starts in 20 appearances.
Chatham Players To Watch
Last time out against Cotuit, Ike Irish (Auburn) received his first off-day of the season. Irish has been an iron man for the Anglers this summer, providing a steady presence behind the plate and as a designated hitter. The Auburn product is Chatham’s hits leader (28) and has gotten on base at a .412 rate. Irish has yet to display his full power this summer with just two home runs, but his ability to get on base has been key for the Anglers.
In his first week with Chatham, Chayton Krauss (Dallas Baptist) has been the Anglers’ best power hitter. Krauss crushed two home runs against Cotuit, which was just his second game on the Cape. The corner infielder continued his momentum with a double against Hyannis Friday — the Anglers’ only extra-base hit. Krauss is coming off a spring with 16 home runs in 60 games with Dallas Baptist.
Cotuit Players To Watch
Tanner Thach has terrorized the Cape League the past few weeks at the plate. After a slump earlier this summer, Thach has been an impossible out during his recent stretch. Thach only failed to reach safely once in five plate appearances against Chatham Thursday. His 1.001 OPS ranks only behind Ethan Petry in the Cape League while his 20 RBIs lead the Kettleers.
Along with Thach, Devin Taylor was a thorn in Chatham’s side during the last matchup with two RBIs. Taylor has become an integral part of the Kettleers lineup with a .296 batting average and .381 on-base percentage. The outfielder has 16 hits in 17 games, driving in 18 runs while holding an OPS of .900.
Stat To Know: 64
Cotuit and Chatham are at different ends of the strikeout spectrum in the CCBL. Cotuit has 64 fewer strikeouts than Chatham across 28 games this summer. The Anglers’ 279 strikeouts are the most in the CCBL. Outside of Brewster (277), no team has more than 265. Meanwhile, Cotuit’s lineup is one of the most patient in the Cape League. The Kettleers’ 215 strikeouts is the lowest total from any team in the league.
Last Time They Played
Just two days ago, Chatham and Cotuit competed in a back-and-forth battle at Lowell Park. The Kettleers scored five runs across the final three innings to come out with an 8-5 win, which was cut short due to a lack of light in the eighth inning.
Krauss blasted two home runs and drove in three runs to pace the Anglers. Will Bermudez (UC Irvine) and Jayden Davis (Vanderbilt) each drove in a run, but Cotuit’s potent offense was too much for Chatham.
