Game 30 Preview: Chatham at Brewster
Chatham may be 2.5 games ahead of Brewster in the East Division standings, but the latter contains the most star-studded roster on Cape Cod.

Nine Whitecaps players will be on display at the 2024 CCBL All-Star Game on July 27. It’s the highest total in the league. The Anglers have a much-more modest four representatives, though the group excludes impact players who have left for MLB like outfielder Austin Overn (Baltimore Orioles) and left-handed pitcher Griffin Herring (New York Yankees).

All-Stars Aiva Arquette, Ashton Larson (LSU), Ike Irish (Auburn) and Gabe Van Emon (UConn) will lead Chatham into a matchup at Brewster Sunday afternoon. If the season ended today, the A’s and Whitecaps would square off in the first round of the East playoffs.

Here’s what to know before Chatham (15-14, East) takes on Brewster (12-16-1, East) at Stony Brook Field in the two teams’ fourth meeting this summer:

Probable Starters

The Anglers will roll with Garrett Helsel (Southern Illinois) Sunday for his first start of the summer after arriving in Chatham two days prior. Helsel, a 6-foot-5 lefty, struck out 51 batters across 19 appearances this spring at Southern Illinois. He also earned eight starting opportunities and recorded a 2-4 record. Helsel was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team after the 2023 season.

Helsel goes up against a tall task in Brewster starter Patrick Forbes. The right-hander from Louisville is one of the most talented hurlers in the CCBL. Forbes boasts a 3.29 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through 13.2 innings, along with racking up 22 strikeouts. He’s also walked just six batters and only allowed one home run. While the Anglers are set to trot out a first-time Cape League starting pitcher, the Whitecaps will throw their top arm.

Chatham Players To Watch

Plenty of day-one contributors have departed Chatham’s roster, yet Arquette is fully entrenched as a primary dugout staple. The shortstop is batting .304, slugging .467 and possesses a .836 OPS. His 28 hits rank second on the Anglers, while his three homers and 18 RBIs rank second and first on the team, respectively. Arquette will represent Chatham as the East Division’s starting shortstop in the CCBL All-Star Game.

Larson will start alongside Arquette. Though, the LSU product will man a spot in the East Division’s starting outfield at the All-Star Game. Larson has been another staple of the A’s roster, even though he joined the club mid-season. In 20 appearances, Larson is hitting .297, getting on base at a .357 clip while totaling 22 hits and a .722 OPS.

Brewster Players To Watch

University of Miami rising sophomore Daniel Cuvet is pinned to man the hot corner for the East on July 27. The power hitter raked a 477-foot home run in Chatham’s previous matchup against the Whitecaps, which would have beat out the longest homer in MLB this season (Shohei Ohtani, 476 feet). Cuvet has totaled six homers, 19 RBIs and has a .966 OPS for the Whitecaps — ranking fifth in the CCBL in that category.

He may not have the longest one, but Brewster catcher Ryder Helfrick refuses to stop hitting home runs. His 10 long balls lead the CCBL. As a result, Helfrick’s 34 RBIs are by far the most on the Cape. The Arkansas product has driven in 10 more runs than any other player who’s played in the CCBL this summer. Helfrick, who will start behind the plate for the East All-Star Team, blasted a go-ahead grand slam early in Chatham’s last meeting with Brewster.

Number To Know: 34

If it wasn’t clear already, the Whitecaps like to hit home runs. They’ve hit 34 of them to be exact, which is the second-highest total in the CCBL.

Brewster hammered two long balls in its last matchup against Chatham, which came courtesy of Cuvet and Helfrick. The Whitecaps are tied for the most runs among East Division clubs with 148. Their offense runs on big, momentum-shifting plays and makes for one of the most dangerous lineups on the Cape.

Last Time They Played

Chatham defeated Brewster 9-6 at Stony Brook Field on July 12 to move to 2-1 versus the Whitecaps in 2024. Brewster wound up equaling just two-thirds of the Anglers’ offensive production, as Chatham’s balanced offense beat the home team’s sheer power.

The Anglers tallied what was a then-season-high 13 hits, including a combined eight knocks from Larson and Irish. Larson drove in a team-best three runs to help propel Chatham to victory, while it also received a 3.2-inning shutout from Van Emon, who earned the long save.
