Game 32 Preview: Chatham at Bourne
Chatham plays its first contest with Eric Beattie as the team’s interim manager Thursday night at Bourne. Former manager Jeremy “Sheets” Sheetinger resigned Wednesday due to personal reasons. Sheetinger helmed the Anglers to a 16-15 record in his short tenure, bringing the A’s to second place in the East Division with a postseason berth in sight.

The Anglers enter their matchup against the Braves following a cancellation Wednesday. They were scheduled to face Hyannis at home, but the game was postponed to Sunday due to fog in the area. The A’s look to avoid two straight defeats as their last result was a 9-2 loss to Falmouth Tuesday.

Here’s what to know before Chatham (16-15, East) takes on Bourne (14-16-2, West) at Doran Park Thursday:

Probable Starters

Lucas Hartman (Florida Gulf Coast) is set to make his first start of the summer for Chatham, and first career CCBL appearance, after joining the roster Tuesday. The 6-foot right-hander transferred to FGCU from Florida Southwestern State heading into this past spring. Hartman tossed 61.1 innings for the Eagles, striking out 60 batters while tallying a 5.72 ERA.

Right-hander Tyler Fay will take the mound for Bourne, his second start of the summer. Fay’s made seven appearances thus far for the Braves, tallying a 4.22 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. The Alabama product’s WHIP sits at an efficient 1.13 mark, while he’s only given up one home run as well. Fay’s innings count is the 13th-highest total in the CCBL.

Chatham Players To Watch

Aiva Arquette, the East Division’s starting shortstop in the 2024 CCBL All-Star Game, is a common recipient of attention among Chatham’s roster, as he remains in the transfer portal.. Arquette’s batting clip sits at .295, while his three homers and .811 OPS rank second and third on the team, respectively.

Arquette is often paired on the left side of the infield with Kyle Lodise (Georgia Tech), who has also been a key cog for Chatham this summer. In 29 appearances, Lodise is batting .250, getting on base at a .406 rate and has accumulated a .775 OPS, which is the fifth-highest total on the A’s. The incoming GT transfer is a threat on the basepaths, too, with eight steals this summer — tied first among active Chatham players.

Bourne Players To Watch

Braves’ first baseman Garrett Michel stands out among a team that doesn’t display much power. His three homers lead the team, one of which includes a two-run blast in the eighth inning against Chatham on July 17 at Veterans Field. Michel’s 15 walks rank tied for second on Bourne, while he’s also added three doubles and 10 RBIs.

With 29 games played, Braden Holcomb is tied for first on the Braves for most appearances. His .300 batting average ranks third on the club, and his 30 hits are good for the second-best total. Holcomb, a Vanderbilt product, has yet to hit a home run this summer and leads Bourne with 34 strikeouts. But his .726 OPS makes him a reliable player near the top of the Braves’ batting order.

Number To Know: 75

The Braves are the best base-stealing team in the CCBL. And it isn’t quite close. Bourne’s 75 steals rank first on the Cape, which is 12 more than any other team and 26 more than Chatham has.

Ethan Conrad’s 17 swipes and Chris Stanfield’s 14 are the two best bag-stealing totals for the Braves. They have 14 players in total who have stolen at least one base this summer, and five who have at least six stolen bags. While Bourne’s power totals are nothing special — hitting a CCBL-low 12 homers through 32 games — it makes up for it plenty on the basepaths.

Last Time They Played

Chatham handily disposed of Bourne 8-4 at home on July 17, which capped off a five-game winning streak for the Anglers. The aforementioned late home run from Michel wasn’t nearly enough to offset Chatham’s six-run explosion in the fifth inning.

The A’s teed off on Bourne reliever Preston Prince. A pair of loud homers from Robin Villeneuve (Texas Tech) and Jayden Davis (Vanderbilt) allowed the A’s to embark for six runs in the fifth, all on a two-out rally. Davis coming around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning was the final insurance run to seal Chatham’s victory.
