Game 38 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis
As the regular season winds down, Chatham faces the class of the East Division, Y-D, one more time ahead of its first postseason appearance since 2019. Yarmouth-Dennis is the lone East opponent which the A’s hold a losing record against this summer.

The Anglers’ 4-0 win over Wareham Thursday, their third straight victory, locked Chatham into the No. 2 seed in the East. If the A’s were to win at home in round one and qualify for the East Division Final, a road battle against Y-D would be their likely matchup. Friday night is their last chance to see how they compare with the Red Sox ahead of the postseason.

Here’s what to know before Chatham (19-18, East) travels to Yarmouth-Dennis (23-10-4, East) in a battle between the East Division’s top-two seeds:

Probable Starters

Carson Johnson (Arizona) joined Chatham’s pitching staff Tuesday, and will make his debut as its starter Friday against Y-D. Johnson, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, did not make an appearance this past spring as a freshman at Arizona. Coming out of Hamilton High School in Arizona’s class of 2023, Johnson was the No. 5 ranked right-handed pitcher in the state.

He will match up against Will Jones of Yarmouth-Dennis. Jones takes the mound for his first start, and appearance, of the summer as well. The 6-foot-5 southpaw from Northeastern is coming off a solid senior year, where he threw in a career-high 14 games. Jones posted a 5.23 ERA over 41.1 innings this past spring, and struck out 45 batters.

Chatham Players To Watch

The A’s roster continues to be altered just about every day. One of their more recent additions is Jordan Williams (Tampa), who joined the team Thursday. He instantly made an impact. Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI in his debut versus Wareham and even garnered an outfield assist on a throw from left field to home plate. With Florida State this spring, Williams batted a whopping .435 and accumulated a 1.172 OPS in 23 at-bats. He is transferring to Tampa ahead of the 2025 season.

First baseman Cole Fellows (Columbia) was added to the Anglers’ roster along with Williams. A rising junior out of Columbia, Fellows batted .305 and slugged .508 across 33 starts in the 2024 campaign. He improved in every offensive category from his freshman to sophomore years with the Lions. Fellows provides Chatham with much-needed infield depth after Eddie Hacopian (Maryland) was released due to injury.

Yarmouth-Dennis Players To Watch

Ethan Petry, the Cape League home-run derby champion, headlines the Red Sox’s roster as their most dominant position player. His OPS sits at 1.177, which is more than 200 points higher than the next-closest total (Bourne’s Ethan Conrad, .923). Petry’s nine homers rank second in the CCBL, his 22 RBIs rank tied for seventh and his .348 batting average ranks third. If there’s anyone on the Cape to consistently pitch around, it’s Petry.

Easton Carmichael packs a punch for Y-D, too. The catcher’s .845 OPS is the second-best total on the team behind Petry, as well as his five home runs and 22 RBIs. Among active catchers in the CCBL, Carmichael sits right behind Brewster’s Ryder Helfrick in the majority of offensive categories. Considering Ike Irish (Auburn) is no longer on the Anglers’ roster, Carmichael will be the most high-profile backstop Friday.

Number To Know: 3

In four tries this season, Chatham hasn’t defeated Y-D. But the two sides have mostly played competitive baseball against each other. The Anglers suffered one lopsided 8-2 loss at Yarmouth-Dennis on June 28. Though, three of their games versus the Red Sox have been losses by two or fewer runs.

Y-D clinched the East Division regular-season title with more than a week remaining until the CCBL Playoffs. Though, Chatham has been the only team down the stretch that has come close at matching the Red Sox’s dominance in the division, giving it a window of opportunity for an upset victory Friday.

Last Time They Played

The Anglers fell at home to the Red Sox 9-8 on July 26 in their second game under interim manager Eric Beattie. It diminished the A’s record against Yarmouth-Dennis to 0-4 in 2024.

Early indications forecasted Chatham being blown out by Y-D, which put up six runs in the top of the first inning against A’s starter Chance Cox (Austin Peay). Yet the Anglers quickly responded with a three-run bottom of the first, capped off by a Chayton Krauss (Dallas Baptist) two-run double. They worked to tie the game at 8-8 entering the ninth. Y-D’s Carter Garate hit an RBI single in the top half, however, and Chatham could not issue an equalizer.
