Game 39 Preview: Chatham vs. Harwich
Chatham sealed the No. 2 seed in the East Division with a win over Wareham Thursday. The Anglers’ next contest came against the only team they haven’t beaten in the CCBL this season — Yarmouth-Dennis. For the fifth time this summer, the A’s fell to Y-D, losing 8-5.
The defeat broke a three-game winning streak for Chatham. But the result doesn’t mean a ton in the grand scheme of things. Y-D sealed the East Division title a week ago with a win over the Anglers.
Chatham still doesn’t know who it'll face in a single elimination game at Veterans Field on Aug 6. Harwich and Orleans seem the most likely, both of which are the Anglers final regular season opponents.
First up is Harwich (15-23, East) at Veterans Field Saturday night. Here’s everything to know ahead of Chatham’s (19-19, East) penultimate game of the regular season:
The A’s will start Augie Mojica on the mound Saturday, his first start of the summer. The right-hander, who spent the spring at San Jacinto Junior College, arrived in Chatham in the middle of the season and has only garnered two appearances. Mojica’s ERA sits at 6.75 through four innings of work. He’s struck out three batters and has totaled a 1.25 WHIP.
Harwich will send Andrew Evans to the mound for his third start of the season. Evans has had a rough go of it with the Mariners. The righty holds an 0-2 record while accumulating a 6.63 ERA in 19 innings across seven total appearances. Evans has allowed three home runs while batters are hitting an astonishing .329 against the righty.
In his second game with Chatham, Daniel Jackson (Georgia) recorded two hits — one of which was a solo home run in the ninth inning. Jackson was a standout with Wofford in the spring, batting .357 while getting on base at a .460 rate. The catcher drove in 69 RBIs on 74 hits and finished with 12 home runs. Jackson has since transferred to Georgia. With Ike Irish (Auburn) gone, Jackson will split reps at catcher with Campbell Smithwick (Ole Miss).
Kyle Lodise (Georgia Tech) continues to provide the Anglers with steady play at shortstop in Aiva Arquette’s absence. Like Jackson, Lodise also crushed a solo home run for the Anglers against Y-D. Lodise’s three home runs this summer are tied with Chayton Krauss (Dallas Baptist) for the most among active players. The shortstop is only batting .231, but he’s drawn a team-high 26 walks and has stolen eight bases.
Michael Anderson remains one the most potent hitters in the CCBL. Anderson leads Harwich in slugging percentage (.455) and OPS (.817) by a wide margin. The first baseman has driven in a team-high 20 runs and blasted five home runs. Anderson spent his first two seasons with Rhode Island, but has since transferred to Arkansas for the upcoming season.
Cam Maldonado remains just as dangerous as Anderson at the plate for Harwich. Maldonado’s 30 hits are the most from any Harwich player while his five home runs are level with Anderson for the team lead. The right fielder also presents a danger on the base paths. Maldonado’s 13 steals are the sixth-most in the Cape League.
Chatham has won 12 games at Veterans Field this summer. The A’s matchup with Harwich will be their final regular-season game at home this summer. Chatham’s record at Veterans Field has been solid this season, going 12-7. The Anglers have had some big wins in front of the home crowd across the summer.
