The Chatham Anglers announced its 2024 team award recipients prior to the A’s East Divisional Round playoff game against Harwich Tuesday. Ashton Larson (LSU) earned the Thurman Munson Outstanding Position Player Award, Gabe Van Emon (UConn) was given the Ed Baird Outstanding Pitcher Award and Campbell Smithwick (Ole Miss) won the Ed Lyons Coach’s Award.
Chatham also recognized the five players who stayed with the team all summer. Smithwick, infielder Jayden Davis (Vanderbilt), infielder Kyle Lodise (Georgia Tech), left-handed pitcher Chance Cox (Austin Peay) and right-handed pitcher Tanner Franklin (Tennessee) were members of the 2024 A’s roster from start to finish. The five day-one players, coined the team's "Warriors," were given shirts to commemorate their loyalty to the team from game one to game 41.
Larson, who joined the Anglers just over a week into the regular season, quickly emerged as an impact player. Slotted near the top of Chatham’s lineup through 31 appearances, Larson batted .316, tallied the second-most hits on the team with 37 and accumulated a .788 OPS. The right fielder was a starter for the East Division in the 2024 CCBL All-Star Game.
Van Emon, a left-handed pitcher, also earned a CCBL All-Star nod but as a reserve. He too arrived in Chatham midway into the season, yet stood out as one of the Anglers’ top bullpen arms. Van Emon tossed 17 innings in the regular season, striking out 22 batters and posting a 2.65 ERA. He also boasted a 0.82 WHIP and held opponents to a measly .143 batting clip.
A member of the A’s since the beginning of the campaign, Smithwick was a staple behind the plate for Chatham. In 26 regular-season games, Smithwick batted .303, got on-base at a .389 rate and registered an OPS of .771. He drove in 12 runs and belted six doubles as well. Smithwick was named the Lyons Award winner as a player who tirelessly worked any way he could to help the team win.
