Game Recap

The Chatham A's lost a tough one to the Wareham Gatemen in a closely contested game. Wareham's game winning run came on a fielding miscue. Ben Clayton had another strong outing, but was the tough luck loser as the Chatham bats were silenced by a strong Wareham pitching staff. Chatham is 0-3 versus Wareham this summer with a make-up game scheduled between the two teams on Monday, July 23, 2001 at Veteran's Field. With the loss, the A's find themselves in second place trailing the YD Red Sox. The A's are off tomorrow, July 21, 2001 for the CCBL All-Star Game in Falmouth. Chatham will be represented by Michael McCoy, Bobby Malek, Daniel Moore, and David Bush in that contest. Please check the CCBL website for additional information on the All-Star Game.

Game Recap

Rich McGuire improved his record to 4-2 while going eight innings against the West Division leading Bourne Braves. The game was played at Coady Field in Bourne due to the upcoming premiere of the movie, "Summer Catch." Bourne will be playing Chatham at Veterans Field on August 1, 2001. In addition to the strong outing by Rich McGuire, the A's bats came alive led by Adam Greenberg's home run which broke an otherwise pitcher's duel wide open. Additional offense was sparked by Bobby Malek, Drew Meyer, and John Schneider who all had extra base hits. Chatham still finds itself chasing the YD Red Sox for first place in the Eastern Division with three-fourths of the season completed.

Game Recap

In a rather historical day for the Chatham A's franchise, The A's defeated the Falmouth Commodores 2-0. The significance of the victory included it being the 900th win in franchise history, 200th career win for Manager John Schiffner, and the clinching of a play-off spot for the seventh year in a row. The game was dominated by pitching on both sides. Daniel Moore (UNC) pitched seven innings of shutout ball with the combination of "thunder and lightening" finishing off the game for the A's. David Bush (Wake Forest) and Zane Carlson (Baylor) have affectionately been referred to this summer as "thunder and lightening" in their roles as set up man and closer. In tandem, these two great pitchers have not lost a lead or game throughout the season. Only one Commodore runner reached third base all evening. Chatham has five more games left in the regular season in their effort to win the Eastern Division against the Y-D Red Sox who are currently in first place by one game (two points).

Game Recap

The Chatham A's who had already clinched first place in the Eastern Division race by virtue of a Y-D Red Sox loss, faced a Harwich Mariner team that was not ready to go home. Despite a pitcher's battler battle between Chatham starter Fraser Dizard (USC) and Joe Saunders of Harwich the Whitecaps eked out an extra inning victory on a controversial walk that drove in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Dizard who pitched splendidly in his last outing against Orleans looked just as strong through five innings. He issued no hits and struck out eleven. Harwich scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. From that point the game became a close affair with Chatham tying the game in the top of the ninth 3-3. The Chatham offense was led by Bobby Malek (Michigan St.) and Kris Cox who hit a critical triple. The game was marked by several oddities including the automatic sprinklers going off at White House Field in the middle of the eighth, a double play completed by the A's on a play that should have ended on an infield fly rule and some controversial home plate calls. The A's finish out the season Sunday evening, August 5th at home versus the Orleans Cardinals. A victory will clinch sole possession of first place for the A's, regardless the A's will have homefield advantage for the divisional play-offs.

Game Recap

Chatham A's starter Rich McGuire (Delaware) gave up six hits and three runs to the Orleans Cardinals as Chatham suffered its first loss of the season to its division rivals. Chatham bats were silenced by Orleans's Trevor Hutchinson who struck out 11 in eight innings. The loss combined with the Y-D Red Sox win landed the A's in a tie and co-Eastern Division Champs of the CCBL. Chatham will have home field advantage in the best 2 out of 3 series by virtue of a tie breaker. Chatham finishes the regular season with a 25-19 record regular season record. It also marks the A's seventh straight appearance in the CCBL post-season. The rotation for the A's appears to be Moore, Hill, and Fraser. 1B/3B Jeremy Cleveland (North Carolina) is on a day to day basis with a sprained wrist. Check the CCBL website throughout the play-offs for all of the post-season action.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's lost the opening game of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship to the Wareham Gatemen 8-3. Wareham jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an Aaron Hill (LSU) home run. Chatham came back to take a 3-2 lead. Wareham blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Regretably the game was marked by poor umpiring, including poor calls by baseline umpires and the ejection of Coach John Schiffner and shortstop Drew Meyer who in an attempt to save 2B Mike McCoy from being ejected were tossed themselves by the highly controversial umpire Nick Zibelli. The A's and Gatemen will meet in game two of the series on Friday night at Veteran's Field at 7:00 pm.

Game Recap

Down 0-1 to the Wareham Gatemen in the CCBL 2001 Championship, the A's were not quite ready to go home. In a great pitchers' duel, The A's prevailed 2-1 over the Gatemen evening the series 1-1 with the deciding game back at Warehan on Sunday, August 12th at 5:00 p.m. A's starter, Fraser Dizard (USC) struggled through the first inning, but gave up only one run and leaving the bases loaded as he pitched out of the jam. Dizard settled down and pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, the one run, and eight stikeouts while gaining the win. The combination of "thunder and lightening," David Bush (Wake Forest) and Zane Carlson (Baylor) came in to finish off the Gatemen in the last home game of the this most memorable 2001 season. Offensively, the A's had just four hits. The most critical, being a homerun by Bobby Malek (Michigan St.) that tied the game in the bottom of the second. This was followed by a basehit off the bat of Michael Moon (USC). Moon moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt and moved to third on a groundout by Karl Nonemaker (Vanderbilt). Moon scored the winning run off an RBI single by John Schneider (Delaware). Attendance at the game was approximately 3500 people. Fans stayed throughout the intermittent showers that stayed from the beginning to the end of the game. The game was managed by Coach Matt Fincher (South Carolina-Spartanburg) as Manager John Schiffner was suspended due to a controversial interaction with umpire Nick Zibelli in game #1. Fortunately for Chatham fans, the CCBL and the integrity of the game, the controversial Zibelli was not part of the umpiring crew.

Game Recap

On a rain-soaked field in Wareham, the Chatham A's dropped their toughest game of the year 4-3 to the Wareham Gatemen. The Gatemen coming off the best regular season record came away with the 2001 CCBL Championship. Wareham got off to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings as steady Rich McGuire (Delaware) was plagued by unusual wildness. Daniel Moore (UNC) replaced McGuire in the third and went 5 strong shutout innings . The A's clawed their way back to tie the score at 3-3 in the eighth. Zane Carlson who had not lost a save opportunity all season pitched a strong eighth. Keith Butler (Liberty) started off the Gatemen ninth with a single to left and got around to third on two infield outs. Butler came into score on an infield hit when Carlson slipped on the wet grass allowing the run to score. While it was a tough loss for the A's and their fans, it marked the end of an exciting 2001 season which will leave indelible memories in the minds of the players, fans, and coaches.
