Game Recap

In a game that brought out a strong turn out by Chatham and Orleans fans as well as major league scouts, the Orleans Cardinal came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Chatham A's 6-4. The game promised to be a great pitching match-up between Chatham's, Tim Stauffer (Richmond) and Orleans', Steven White (Baylor). Chatham jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a Michael Moon lead-off homerun in the first. Behind future first-rounder, Stauffer, the A's had a solid 4-1 lead sailing into the eighth inning. Stauffer appeared to be running out of gas with two out in the eighth when Manager John Schiffner went to his ace reliever Zane Carlson (Baylor). Carlson walked the first batter he faced, this was followed by a solid basehit to center that skipped by the Chatham centerfielder, letting up three runs and tying the game 4-4. In the ninth the floodgates once again opened on a defensive lapses in the outfield that scored two more runs for the Cardinals. The A's were unable to come back against Orleans closer, Whitley Benson (UNC) and were handed a very tough defeat (6-4) by their arch-rivals from Orleans. Always looking for a silver lining in the dark cloud, the A's came back from a string of recent poor offensive games to collect 10 hits, led by Michael Moon. The two teams meet again on Friday night with action at Orleans at 7:00 pm.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's took an early 2-0 lead against the Orleans Cardinals. Unfortunately for the A's they would be the only two runs of the game. The Cardinals offense began their scoring attack in the bottom of the third and by the end of the game the A's suffered another set back losing 7-2. Starring for the A's was Chris Iannetta (UNC) who had a two run home run while having two hits in three plate appearances and Blake Hanan (Siena) who went 2-4. The loss puts the struggling A's at a record of 6-12-1 as the half-way point of the CCBL season quickly approaches. Coach Schiffner's men will be back in action Saturday night against the Y-D Red Sox at Veterans' Field, Chatham. The game begins at 7:00 p.m.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's started off their contest with the Y-D Red Sox, by having starter Aaron Trolia (Edmunds CC/Clemson) strike out nine Red Sox through 4 2/3 innings. Trolia who has not primarily been a starter in his college career ran out of gas in the Y-D 5th and was replaced by Adam Yates (Mississippi). After escaping with just one run scored in the Y-D sixth, the defensively challenged A's started a serious of five errors over the next two innings resulting in a 6-0 Red Sox victory. The A's were held to four hits by Y-D starter Daric Merrell (Cal. State Fullerton) who beat the A's for the second straight time. The A's were shutout for the seventh time this season as the offense continues to be anemic. The last place A's have now lost seven in a row as they head into an afternoon road game against the Eastern divison, Bourne Braves. Players and coaches are still quite optimistic about turning around the season and having a strong second half. Unquestionably the bats and overall defense will need to come alive to support an otherwise strong pitching staff.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's snapped an eight game losing streak by defeating the Western Division Cotuit Kettleers 2-1. Fraser Dizard (USC) started for the A's going five strong innings while striking out nine Kettleers. Dizard was not involved in the decision as the A's bullpen was more than up to the task danning an additional seven Kettleers. Adam Yates (Mississippi) was the winning pitcher, while closer Zane Carlson (Baylor) was credited with his fifth save of the season. The A's hitting attack was led by hot hitting Michael Moon (USC). Moon had three hits in three at-bats, while knocking in one run and scoring another. Two of Moon's hits were doubles. Jeremy Cleveland (UNC) was 2-4 while continuing to improve his offensive production. At the half-way point of the season the A's have certainly had their disappointments. Game Recap

In a game that started off as a great pitching match-up between Tim Stauffer (Richmond) and Orleans' Brian Rogers (Georgia Southern) ended up in a defensive disaster for the A's. There were a throng of scouts looking at two potential first round draft choices and the first few innings looked like the pitcher's duel that was expected. Stauffer tired in the seventh and left with the the A's down 3-2. By the time the inning was over it would be 10-2 Orleans. The inning was a calamity of errors, hit batsmen, walks and errors as the A's relievers did not get the job done. While only credited with three errors by the official scorer, it was apparent to most fans that the scorer was being kind to the A's defensive lapses. Overall, A's pitchers hit five Orleans batters. Stauffer suffered his first loss of the season. The offense was led by Jeremy Cleveland who hit his second jome run of the season. Not so ironically, Stauffer and Cleveland were the two A's who were named to the East CCBL All-Star squad earlier in the day.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's who have sputtered the entire season at the plate appeared to take out their frustrations on the Brewster Whitecaps as the A's scored eight runs on eleven hits. The A's hitting was led by the Wake Forset duo of Ryan Johnson and Steve LeFaivre. Johnson was 3-3 with a homerun and triple while knocking in two runners and scoring three. LeFaivre went 3-5 knocking in three runs and scoring three. Tim Layden (Duke) contributed with 2-4 hitting with 2 RBIs. Greg Condon (George Washington) won his first game of the year giving up three runs in five innings. Condon is now 1-2. The A's are off on Tuesday evening as the CCBL all-stars are honored at Fenway Park in Boston. Jeremy Cleveland (UNC) and Tim Stauffer (Richmond) will represent the A's. Despite the fact that the A's remain in the cellar of the Eastern Division, the eternal optimist would note that they are only eight points out of second place. The A's will have to go on a sustained winning streak over the next two weeks, but as CCBL observers would note, starnger things can occur.

Game Recap

The Chatham A's took an early 3-0 lead off of the Y-D Red Sox, but a combination of a strong Red Sox offense and lost opportunities by the A's proved too much as the A's lost 7-5. Greg Conon (George Washington) started for the A's, but was lifted in the third with the A's leading 3-2 in the fourth. Middle reliever was rocked for an additional four runs and suffered the defeat for the A's. Offensively, the A's were led by the 3-4 hitting of Steve LeFevre (Wake Forest) which included a late home run (4th), Michael Moon.(USC) 2-4 hitting including two doubles, and Chris Iannetta (UNC) who hit his second home run of the season. The loss unfortunately insures that the A's will finish less than .500 for the first time since 1994.

Game Recap

In perhaps the most exciting game of the season, the Chatham A's rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat the visiting Brewster Whitecaps 6-5 in ten innings. The Whitecaps who have been battling for the second spot in the Eastern Divison play-offs were victim to a four run rally by the "never surrender" Chatham A's who have figured in the spoiling of the Falmouth Commodores and now the Whitecaps hopes for post-season play. When all looked dismal for the A's, Chad Orvella (NC State) singled to load the bases in the bottom of the 10th. Singles by Simon Williams (Maine), Jamie D'Antona (Wake Forest, and the winning RBI from Steve LeFaivre (Wake Forest) provided the four runs that stunned the Whitecaps while bringing joy to an otherwise frustrating season for the A's and their fans. Of special note was the 3-5 performance by the oft injured Williams and the remarkable 5 K two inning performance of Dennis Gramolini (George Washington). The game marked the fourth consecutive win for the A's and made fans long for a season that would go another five games. Regretably the season finale for the A's will be played at Orleans tomorrow night.

Game Recap

Chatham sent ace Tim Stauffer against the league leading Orleans Cardinals in its season finale. Regretably for the A's the Cardinals proved to be a tough opponent and the A's were on the losing end of a 3-2 defeat. The A's went into the bottom of the 8th all tied up at 2-2 when the Cardinals scored the winning run on a bases loaded hit batsman that plated the deciding run. Stauffer who appears to be headed in the direction of being a certain first rounder in next year's draft struck out eight as he increased his league leading total to 67Ks for the season. Offensively, Steve LeFaivre continued a sparkling week by going 2-4 including an RBI. The A's complete the season at 19-23-2. Thanks to all of our fans for support through the first non play-off season since 1994. The A's will be looking to rebuild for the 2003 season and wish the best to all those teams having made the play-offs.
