2019 POSITION PLAYERS CHATHAM ANGLERS
BRADY SMITH - FLORIDA
(C) B-T – R-R / 5’11 – 195 LBS.
Brady Smith appeared in more than 50 games in his second season for the University of Florida, solidifying his role in the Gators’
starting lineup and behind the plate. His best performance as a sophomore came on April 18 against a top-15 LSU team as the
opponent, when he batted 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs, 3 Runs, and a Home Run. He started in 40 games as a freshman in 2018 and helped
lead Florida to the College World Series semifinals by hitting .333 with 2 RBIs in the tournament. Brady has the potential to hit
for average and power.
ALEX TORAL - MIAMI
(1B) B-T – L-L / 6’1 – 220 LBS
Alex Toral’s offensive game exploded in his sophomore season for the Miami Hurricanes. After hitting just .161 in 33 games as a
freshman, he hammered 17 home runs at the time of printing, which was good enough to finish second in the ACC in home runs
tailing former Angler and Georgia Tech catcher, Kyle McCann. Toral plated over 50 RBIs in 2019. He started in every game he
played in as a sophomore and set personal career highs for hits, home runs, and RBIs in a single game. Alex had the high slugging
percentage throughout the 2019 collegiate season. Alex was a High School All-American.
SPENCER TORKELSON - ARIZONA STATE
(1B, OF) B-T – R-R / 6’1 – 200 LBS.
Spencer Torkelson, the 2018 NCAA home run leader, returns to Chatham after hitting .343 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs on the
Cape last summer. He played first base for the Arizona State Sun Devils during the collegiate season but emerged as the Anglers’
starting right fielder during the summer. He reached base in every game he played in on Cape Cod, despite leaving Chatham to
compete for the USA Collegiate National Team. His batting average hovered around .360 at ASU in 2019, proving that he is one
of the most prolific hitters in college baseball. His home run and RBI totals finished in the top-5 in the Pac-12 Conference and he
was named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list. Torkelson is already being considered as high first rounder for the
2020 MLB First Year Player Draft.
ANTHONY VILAR - MIAMI
(OF) B-T – L-R / 5’10 – 190 LBS.
A Miami native, Anthony Vilar made an immediate impact in his first season with the Miami Hurricanes in 2019. He had played
and started in every game at the time of printing. His selectiveness at the plate allowed him to draw the second most walks on
the team while still hitting in the .300 range and having a high on base percentage. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the
2018 MLB Draft out of Westminster Christian High School, but opted to attend the University of Miami instead, where his father,
Henry, played from 1990-91. Vilar is one of four Miami Hurricanes to play for the 2019 Anglers.
PAXTON WALLACE - WICHITA STATE
(1B/3B) B-T – R-R / 6’1 – 215 LBS.
After starting just 16 games as a freshman for Wichita State, Paxton Wallace started and played in every game as a sophomore
in 2019. He was effective as a freshman, proving to be a consistent hitter and reliable defender for the Shockers in his second
season. His batting average settled in around .275 and he knocked in more than 30 RBIs in 2019 while showing some power. He
has consistently proven to be an offensive threat as an underclassman. Wallace led the state of Arkansas in RBIs as a freshman at
Greenbrier High School in 2014, earning all-conference, all-state, and Arkansas Preps freshman/sophomore team honors.
CHARLIE WELCH - PEPPERDINE
(C) B-T – R-R / 6’2 – 210 LBS.
Charlie Welch, an athletic catcher from Clearwater, Florida. He saw action in more than 20 games in his freshman campaign at
Pepperdine. He made his collegiate debut on February 15 against Cal State Bakersfield and batted 2-for-3 with a grand slam. One
week later, he led the Waves into Nashville, Tennessee and went 3-for-4 with an RBI against a top-10 Vanderbilt team. His strong
lateral movement and quickness behind the plate make him a reliable defender at the collegiate level. Welch was one of the top
high school catchers in the country in 2018.
FREDDY ZAMORA - MIAMI
(SS) B-T – R-R / 6’1 – 185 LBS.
Freddy Zamora has started in every game he’s played at the University of Miami dating back to the beginning of his freshman
season in 2018. He was named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American after hitting .303 and leading Miami in multiple
offensive categories in 2018. He hit around .300 throughout 2019 Hurricane season with more than 40 RBIs as a sophomore and
earned ACC Player of the Week honors in March. Anglers’ fans should expect to see speed on the base paths from Freddy. A Miami
native, Zamora is the son of a former Nicaraguan professional baseball player.
